Plans for the January transfer window at Aston Villa, including Jeremie Frimpong’s choice and Jhon Duran’s future
Aston Villa has the chance to bolster Unai Emery’s squad after an incredible first half of the season as the team aims for Champions League qualification and Europa Conference League triumph come May.
Moussa Diaby and Youri Tielemans’ summer signings have raised the caliber of Emery’s squad, while Pau Torres has
completely changed the way his team plays. On loan, Nicolo Zaniolo and Clement Lenglet have also shown to be
valuable signings, and Villa is willing to support its head coach once more during this window.
Emery lobbied hard for Alex Moreno to join in January of last year, and the club’s recruitment team chose Jhon
Duran. After delaying his plans to replace Danny Ings, who left for West Ham, Emery intended to bring in another
seasoned center-forward to his team in the summer.
Duran might leave Villa this month—probably on loan—if Emery can find a striker to add to his team. There is a lot
of interest in the 20-year-old. Although AC Milan is keeping a careful eye on the matter, they will need to find room
in their roster for Duran if they decide to pursue a transfer.
Meanwhile, it’s reported that Villa is keeping an eye on a number of wingers and is interested in Leeds’ Crysencio
Summerville and Sporting’s Geny Catamo. It’s uncertain what the club will focus on in the January window because
this month’s arrivals are mostly determined by availability.
Since Bertrand Traore‘s contract expires at the end of this season, he may make place for a new signing during this
window or in the summer. In regards to contracts, it is known that talks over a new agreement for Rory Wilson are
not yet at an advanced point, and Leon Bailey will enter the final year of his current one this summer unless he
writes new terms.
Villa is still short at right-back and may hold off on making a move for a top player until the summer. Jeremie
Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen has been connected and will go up for £35 million in July. The highly regarded
defender extended his contract until 2028 in October, and many teams will be enticed by his release clause.
Despite seeing little action in the Premier League this season, Emery stated that Clement Lenglet “needs” to stay at
the team past the January transfer window. This month, there is interest in the Barcelona loanee, but the center back
will play a part in this campaign. Calum Chambers will be free to go in the interim provided a fair offer is made.
Leander Dendoncker’s future is likewise unclear. The Belgian international has only made one Premier League start
so far this year. Tyler Adams was once a target for Villa as they contemplated a summer transfer for a holding
midfielder. Given the importance of Boubacar Kamara’s absence towards the end of December during his
suspension, an injury to him could be devastating to Villa’s goals this season.
Villa has been keeping an eye on many goalkeeper prospects who may flourish at Bodymoor Heath. Either in this
window or during the summer, Emery would prefer to sign a new goalkeeper.
