When Philippe Clement made his initial move for Rangers,

the transfer window had not even opened. Now that Steven Alzate has been linked,

the month is already looking like it will be busy.

The 25-year-old Brighton midfielder, who is presently on loan at Standard Liege,

the team from which Nicolas Raskin relocated to Ibrox,

is rumoured to have been offered by the Gers manager.

A prior evaluation of Steven Alzate and his compatriot may come in handy as

Philippe Clement attempts to bolster his Rangers team.

Steven Alzate has a Nicolas Raskin reference from the Rangers.

Ironically, it was Raskin’s move to Glasgow in January of last year,

playing alongside Alzate for Standard,

that gave the Colombian international the opportunity to showcase his true abilities.

Gordon Greer, the loan manager for Brighton,

delivered his assessment to the media team of the club

following his observation of the 25-year-old playing a more significant role for the Juniper Pro League squad:

“In the past few months, he [Alzate] has excelled.

After selling Nicolas Raskin to the Rangers,

Steven was able to return to his more comfortable position as the holding midfielder.

“We were really hoping for him to stay a starter after he moved,

and he has been one for the entire season.”

For Rangers, Philippe Clement needs exactly this kind of player.

a naturally gifted defensive midfielder with a wealth of passing ability.

Although John Lundstram has been playing well lately, this isn’t his ideal role.

Alzate has a similar profile to Alexis Mac Allister,

so there is a lot to like. Since Brighton hasn’t yet exercised his one-year option,

he is technically free to talk with Rangers about a pre-contract arrangement.

The fact that Clement has been given him implies that

the Premier League team is looking to turn a little profit while they can.

There are instances when a manager’s prior experience working

with a player or member of the squad serves as the best scouting tool available.

When it comes to a player’s attitude, mindset, and suitability,

what appears good on paper doesn’t always convey the whole story.

We do know that Rangers have the opportunity to sign Steven Alzate,

an international football player with Premier League experience who has thrived in a league that is comparable to ours.
