Brad Stevens reveals prototype target for the Celtics
In the NBA, the Boston Celtics hold the
best record. In addition to leading the
Eastern Conference, they are regarded as
having one of the NBA’s most talented
rosters. The Celtics still need to fill a
vacant roster position, though. Boston is
anticipated to add someone as the trade
deadline of February 8 draws near.
Brad Stevens, the president of basketball
operations for the Boston Celtics,
recently spoke about the kind of player
he is hoping to acquire for the second
half of the season during a press
conference that came after a team practice
According to The Athletic’s Jay King,
Stevens noted how Boston would be
looking to add another ‘big wing.’
However, he was also quick to note the
Celtics were limited in trade resources.
For the past two seasons, finding a
backup wing who can contribute on both
sides of the court has been Boston’s
perfect addition. Although Lamar
Stevens and Osahe Brissett were added
by Boston in the summer, they are both
regarded as energy players and are
noted for their defensive potential.
Dalano Banton is large enough to play on
the wings, but his shooting isn’t good enough.
In addition to having several draft picks
at their disposal, the Celtics also have a
$6.2 million trade exception thanks to
Grant Williams’ summer sign-and-trade
to the Dallas Mavericks. It will be
extremely tough to find someone who is
prepared to come off the bench for such
a modest pay and who can affect the ball
on both sides of the court. That’s the
reason Boston keeps looking for the
illusive “wing with size” that Stevens mentions.
The Celtics staying put at the trade
deadline makes the most sense. As long
as the player’s salary is within the traded
player exception’s worth, they are able to
sign him off waivers. If not, they’ll
probably use a two-way player conversion to fill
Neemias Queta has performed well.
However, Drew Peterson could also be a
candidate to switch from a two-way
contract, as Stevens may see him as a
similar project to Sam Hauser, who has
thrived since coming through Boston’s
development system as an undrafted rookie.
Whatever the Celtics decide to do, it’s
likely to be a fringe move. Their top-eight
rotation is highly talented and
performing at a consistently high level.
Stevens is looking for depth, and that
narrows the player pool. Either way,
Boston will be a threat in the postseason
and will continue to be viewed as championship favorites.
