In the 73rd minute of West Ham vs. Brighton, David Moyes made a genuinely perplexing decision
Last night’s Premier League match between Brighton and West Ham at the London Stadium concluded in a scoreless tie.
After a fiercely contested draw with a smooth Brighton team, West Ham United concluded the holiday season in
sixth place in the Premier League standings. Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Paqueta, and Nayef Aguerd, among others,
were not available for the Hammers’ match against the Seagulls, meaning that manager David Moyes was only able
to use five first-team players.
While our team’s performance against Brighton wasn’t great, Moyes gave his goalkeeper, full-backs, and center-
backs a lot of credit when he spoke with reporters following the game. Aside from the defenders, Moyes and the
supporters are most concerned about the poor performance of the peripheral players that entered the team. They are
all so slow, and the Scot needs to see that a major overhaul is required if we are to succeed in the coming years on all
fronts. When Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals entered the side last night, they were both actually fairly
underprivileged. The Spaniard completely dominated the game, although the Algerian at least had a few strong
moments in the second half and toward the end of the first half.
In light of this, Moyes’s substitution in the 73rd minute was somewhat odd.
Moyes made a perplexing choice during Brighton vs. West Ham.
When there were about twenty minutes remaining, Moyes substituted Divin Mubama for Benrahma. Bringing the
19-year-old on board is fine, but why in the world wasn’t Fornals taken off before Benny? It was a completely absurd
move on Moyes’ part; the Spaniard struggled against Brighton and almost everything he did put us in danger
defensively. The claim that Fornals provides us with a stronger defensive than Benrahma is one I find hard to
accept. Throughout the first half, the Algerian tracked back multiple times to support his colleague Emerson.
Even though the former Brentford player has performed terribly for us this year, in the final third he posed a far
greater threat than his Spanish colleague. During last night’s West Ham vs. Brighton match, Moyes chose to hook
Benny rather than Pablo, and that move might have lost us any chance of victory. When the Scot rewatches the entire
90 minutes today, hopefully he will realise that.
