Jim Harbaugh should consider NFL move from Michigan, Desmond Howard says

Amidst circulating NFL rumors, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is maintaining a “one-track mind” in advance of

Monday’s College Football Playoff.

This week, when asked about his relationship to the Los Angeles Chargers, who now have an open coaching position,

he avoided answering. But according to ESPN College GameDay analyst and former Michigan player Desmond

Howard, given the events of the 2023 season, including Harbaugh’s late-season suspension imposed by

commissioner Tony Petitti and the Big Ten, this may be Harbaugh’s chance to clear his record and start over in the NFL.

First and foremost, Howard told ESPN’s Pat McAfee on Thursday, “Michigan fans view it as a distraction, a kind of

recruiting distraction.” “They appear to be individuals attempting to divert prospects from signing. To be really

honest with you, though, if I were Jim Harbaugh and that’s what you hear being discussed, I would consider it a

possibility given how my commissioner handled the situation. You can’t just treat me whatever you want to because

you think you can because I’m old enough. Jim recently celebrated his birthday; I think he turned 61.”

According to Howard, Michigan “knows their mission” and the Wolverines won’t be distracted by NFL rumors in the

lead-up to the Rose Bowl.

The three-time Big Ten champion Harbaugh first discussed his job choices in November of this year. He recounted

an earlier discussion on coaching as long as he can have with his father. Alejandro Zuniga reports that Harbaugh

made a joke that elicited some of the greatest chuckles and applause of the evening at Michigan’s football awards

luncheon, after taking a photo with numerous fourth- and fifth-year players before departing for Pasadena.

Per The Michigan Insider, Harbaugh remarked, “I’d just like to say that I hope some of you are coming back next year.”

In addition, despite Harbaugh’s persistent flirtations with the next level in recent years, the NFL media remains

dubious about his pro choices. Early in the season, The Michigan Insider revealed that insiders anticipate Harbaugh

will listen to rumors about the NFL once more, maybe including one about a Chicago Bears opening, but some of

those discussions have since subsided.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Harbaugh’s tenure in Ann Arbor is still ongoing, and it will take the team two more victories this year before rumors start to swirl once more. He feels the same way that Howard does.

During an appearance this month on the Pat McAfee Show, Schefter stated, “To me, he’s always wanted to bring a

national championship to Michigan, and I think if he brings a national championship to Michigan, I would think

there’ll be a part of him that feels like he set out to do what he intended all along.” And that, in my opinion, would

grant him even more freedom to make the leap to the NFL. Once more, he has evaluated this throughout the

previous two years. Minnesota came after him two years ago. Denver chased him last year. He has therefore given

these ideas some thought.

Before the 2022 season, Harbaugh inked a five-year contract extension. During the winter, he continued to make

overtures to the NFL. Although there have been discussions about another deal, the seasoned coach has not yet

signed anything.
