Leander Dendoncker’s performance for Aston Villa in their 3-2 loss to

Manchester United on December 26 may have prompted Unai Emery to make a transfer U-turn.

Villa’s second goal of the match came from a corner,

although Dendoncker’s performance overall was better than it had been

in previous weeks as he tried to establish himself in and around the first team.

This follows a story [Jacob Tanswell, December 17] stating that Emery was not persuaded by

Beglian’s performances and that there were rumours he would be sold during the January transfer window.

The Belgian midfielder needed to make an impression against United because

there were a lot of speculations about a move and doubt surrounding his future at Villa Park.

His pivotal position in midfield may have persuaded many that he can contribute to this squad.

In addition to winning two of his three aerial duels and five of his six attempted ground duels,

his 89 percent passing accuracy demonstrated his ability to maintain possession in

the middle of the field against a side that had chosen to press high.

He also demonstrated his dominance in individual bouts.

In addition, Dendoncker made four tackles and two interceptions while positioned in front of the defence to try

and shield United’s midfield from the threat offered by key creator Bruno Fernandes.

Even though Villa lost, it would be unfair to blame the Beglian for any of the three goals they gave up;

Erik ten Hag’s squad often bypassed the midfield with balls in below the defensive line,

which proved to be their downfall.

Under Emery, Dendoncker might finally be headed towards redemption after

scoring a goal and putting in a strong overall performance.

Even if he still has a lot to prove before he can call the starting spot his own,

a great showing at Old Trafford is always a good place to start.
