What makes 49ers’ Brock Purdy so incredible, per John Harbaugh

On Christmas Day, in Week 16, Brock Purdy and Lamar Jackson, two contenders for NFL MVP,

will square off. Since being selected by the Baltimore Ravens late in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft,

Jackson has established himself as one of the league’s best quarterbacks. As a dual-threat quarterback,

he has set numerous records and was named the NFL MVP for 2019.

Meanwhile, Purdy has been a pleasant surprise over the past season and a half.

Originally an afterthought when the San Francisco 49ers drafted him last overall in 2022, Purdy rose

to the challenge while filling in due to quarterback injuries. His initial success was

credited to the team around him, but as Purdy emerges into a true MVP candidate,

it’s hard not to recognize the totality of game.

Similar to how Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton characterized Purdy on Wednesday,

Ravens coach John Harbaugh shared his own thoughts on what makes Purdy so good.

“He has visions. He removes the ball quickly. He is capable of making every throw.

According to The Athletic’s David Lombardi, Harbaugh said of Purdy, “He throws a beautiful ball,

moves around the pocket, scrambles when he needs to, throws on the run when he needs to,

and operates the system really well—all the things that I’m sure their coaches really want to see in a quarterback.”

This season, Brock Purdy has established a reputation for foresight and judgment, as Harbaugh noted.

In addition, as demonstrated by his touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey against the Cardinals,

he has the ability to improvise in the pocket and make plays with his legs.

The NFL’s top quarterback in terms of passing touchdowns, yards per attempt, QBR,

for 3,795 yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging 9.9 yards per pass attempt.
