Success typically motivates teams to overlook infrequent errors of judgment or personality defects.

The industry’s economic and meritocracy elements can mitigate the negative effects of most non-criminal bad images,

or if they can’t, at least lessen them. Though it defies much of what is ingrained in our minds from an early age,

it is an unsettling fact that is unlikely to go away. With Draymond Green in their lineup,

the Golden State Warriors are all too familiar with the pros and cons of his presence.

To be clear, the four-time champion has largely remained out of public scrutiny away from the basketball court.

And even in that sphere, there are many times where the line is blurred when it comes to him.

Green stomped on Sacramento Kings All-Star Domantas Sabonis but was grabbed first.

He put Minnesota Timberwolves defensive powerhouse Rudy Gobert in a chokehold but

did so after the latter put his hands on teammate Klay Thompson.

Now, this is not to say that I support Green. Those excessive overreactions cannot be justified by either of those “buts.”

They are only provided to demonstrate the idea that, most of the time, there is more context available

to at least partially explain why the past defensive player of the year can occasionally turn so insane.

But there’s no “but” to his most recent violent jab at Jusuf Nurkic in the Warriors’

Tuesday loss to the Phoenix Suns, which earned him an indefinite suspension.

Can the company continue to rely on the positive energy that its most reliable defender and finest energizer bring?

For the time being, it appears so. A league source informed Steve Bulpett of Heavy Sports,

“He drives them crazy.” However, whenever I speak with those individuals, I always get the feeling that they

genuinely believe they can’t win without him. He is crucial to how they must play in order to win and how they wish to play.

It is challenging to disagree with that evaluation. Many Warriors supporters think that if

Draymond Green hadn’t been controversially suspended for striking LeBron James in the groin during the 2016 NBA Finals,

the team would have another title banner flying from the ceiling. His defense, tenacity,

and underappreciated playmaking are essential components of this dynastic machine. Thus,

Golden State may be in for some problems.

Although Green says the strike on Nurkic was inadvertent, he is undergoing counseling. That development inspires some optimism, but it does not make things any easier on the Dubs in the present.

Despite winning its last two games, the team is 12-14 and sits in 11th place in the West.

Green’s unknown absence makes for a much more arduous climb back up the standings for the Warriors.

If they can stay afloat and the four-time All-Star works through any issue he might have,

then perhaps this franchise can once again avoid having to make a major and unpleasant decision.
