Both the Black Ferns and the All Blacks Sevens went down swinging against elite opposition in Cape Town last weekend, but they were unsuccessful in winning the cup final for the second time in as many weeks.

The men’s and women’s teams from New Zealand’s ascent to the rank of world champions in 2022–2023 are now firmly in the past. They haven’t been able to replicate such feats this season, at least not yet.

Earlier this month, at the Dubai SVNS, the Australian women’s team interrupted New Zealand’s historic 41-game unbeaten streak. A week later, the women in black were unable to recover.

Giant killers France ended the Black Ferns Sevens’ pursuit of Cape Town SVNS glory when they played in the sun on a steaming Sunday afternoon in the Western Cape.

Les Tricolores cruised to a hard-fought 24-12 victory in their semi-final thanks to two tries in the first half to Anne-Cecile Ciofani.

For the majority of the second term, New Zealand was formidable and had every opportunity to make a comeback; however, France was simply too strong, increasing their lead every time a player was sent off.

The Black Ferns Sevens, who won the World Series the previous season, are a nearly flawless team, but they still have work to do before their “massive year” in 2024.

Coach Cory Sweeney commented on NZR+, “I guess that’s sevens, but disappointing with the result.”

We lost that French game because of five crucial occasions. Aside from that, this past weekend we most likely played some extremely good rugby.
