As the season draws to a close, Aston Villa is well-positioned to compete in the Champions League thanks to one of their strongest starts in recent memory, according to supporters.

Villa’s performance has been largely attributed to their outstanding home performance; after 16 games,

they have 35 points, two points less than league leaders Liverpool.

Unai Emery’s team has solidified their status as one of the top four contenders with back-to-back home

victories over Manchester City and Arsenal, the top two teams from the previous campaign.

However, the team will have further chances to increase the depth of their roster during the January transfer window.

Aston Villa’s former captain Micah Richards believes the team should buy a striker

to provide Ollie Watkins more competition given the demands of Europa Conference League

knockout action and the FA Cup’s commencement.

With eight goals and six assists from 16 league starts, Watkins is the team’s top scorer in the

league and has led the line brilliantly this season.

The England international has been the star of the show all season long

and has added five more goals in seven outings in Europe.

Jhon Duran, a teenage striker from Colombia, is Aston Villa’s reserve striker. Moussa Diaby,

a winger, may fill in as a makeshift center forward when necessary.

Richards has pushed Aston Villa to acquire a forward because he thinks Watkins needs more assistance to get the team through a demanding second half of the season.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Richards said: “You know who I’m going to go with,

someone left field and you guys probably haven’t seen him play, no disrespect because

we don’t watch a lot of Championship.

“Someone like a (Ben) Brereton Diaz. Someone who’s just below a level, that’s what I’m trying to say.”

24-year-old Chilean striker Ben Brereton Diaz has made 27 appearances and scored seven goals for his country.

His final two seasons at Ewood Park saw him score 36 goals in 80 appearances, placing him among Blackburn’s best scorers in the Championship on a regular basis.

He completed a move to join Spanish powerhouse Villarreal during the summer transfer window,

however he has not yet scored a goal in La Liga and has made a total of 17 appearances across all competitions.

Leeds.Live claims that Daniel Farke’s Leeds United team is also considering the

striker as they look to return to the Championship.
