The Spanish media has launched an investigation into how the Europa League Group C favourites,

Rangers, defeated Real Betis 3-2 and were demoted to the Conference League.

Abdallah Sima, Cyriel Dessers, and Kemar Roofe scored goals to give

the Ibrox team a historic victory over the La Liga team,

making them the first Scottish team to triumph in Seville on their ninth try.

Rangers’ victory guaranteed them a berth in the Europa League last 16,

as they defeated their Spanish rivals 3-1 to take first place in the group.

Sparta Prague, in second place, defeated Aris Limassol 3-1 to finish third.

The World Cup-winning Argentina center-back Guido Rodriguez’s injury was

highlighted by El Pais as a major contributing factor to Betis’s’very soft in defence’ label,

which made the loss a’big disappointment’ for the team.

“Marc Roca had to play centre back and was quite unfortunate,” they stated.

“The Andalusian team was eliminated from the Europa League after a wild match with lots of options.

“Against a very good Rangers squad, Betis was a nightmare on defence.

Because the Andalusian team did not commit a single foul in the first half,

the Scots capitalised on these flaws to take the lead on the scoreboard.

Since the score was 2-2 at the interval and Betis had thrown two balls into the woodwork,

they did respond offensively.

Rangers’ lead was now 2-3 thanks to a goal by Roofe in the 78th minute.

Betis was unable to respond.

“Villamarín had a terrible night against Glasgow Rangers,

who could only move on to the next round as the top of Group C by capitalising on

the mistakes made by the green and white players.

“Manuel Pellegrini’s team crumbled against the Scots,

inspired by one of its devoted supporters on a night when a draw was sufficient.

Perhaps since it was unexpected,

the farewell hurts even more than the one experienced in the final minute of

extra time against Eintracht two years ago.”

The talent level displayed by Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers,

who turned his defender inside out before slipping the ball between

custodian Rui Silva’s legs to put Rangers ahead 2-1,

has garnered him comparisons to Betis and Spain’s Isco.

“Isco’s skill competed with that of Cyriel Dessers,

author of a fabulous individual action that had earned the score,

” they said. “Rui Silva’s domain was rattled by Rangers with very little,

and it was evident in the last action, which followed a corner kick.

Kemar Roofe scored 2-3 with a foreshortened shot from the small area

after a few shots in the area were allowed by the poor defence.”

The inclusion of Luiz Felipe in Betis’ Europa League squad list was deemed a mistake,

and the Brazilian defender was later sold to Al-Ittihad of the Saudi Pro League,

leaving Manuel Pellegrini’s team without defensive cover for their European campaign.

The Spanish newspaper Marca blamed Betis’ mistakes for their elimination.

They wrote: “An unfortunate event that lends itself to various interpretations,

chief among them being the gamble the club took in September when it entered the tournament registration list.

Luiz Felipe, whose move to Al-Ittihad of the Saudi league was the subject of lengthy negotiations,

was selected by the Heliopolitan squad to play in the competition’s group stage at that time.

The Italian-Brazilian left Pezzella and Bartra in charge of covering

the centre back as they were the only centre backs registered,

two days after he presented the list and with no way to correct it.

The Catalan had such unfortunate timing that he sustained a severe injury not long after,

which prevents him from returning to the pitch.”

They also called Jack Butland, the Rangers’ custodian,

the team’s “saviour” after he made a number of important saves.

“The green and white team hardly had a chance to create a draw

that would have sent them into the playoffs at the last second due to haste,

exhaustion, and tactical confusion in the last minutes.

And the one time he did manage to get the ball into a dangerous area, Pezzella’s strike,

which turned him into a makeshift centre forward, eliminated Butland, saving his side,

which advances straight to the Europa League round of 16 and advances Betis to the Conference playoffs.”
