Sean Dyche could finally axe Everton dud this summer alongside Andre Gomes
Everton’s financial malpractice has largely been caused due to the slew of failed transfers committed during Farhad Moshiri’s reign.
Having joined in 2016, the Iranian billionaire promised the world to this fanbase, and has delivered on few of those claims.
As a result, Sean Dyche and his players are currently bearing the brunt of his errors; the ten-point deduction is severe but ultimately a result of his aimless, free-spending behavior.
Even now, after years of not having to sell in order to make large purchases, they are still paying for it with the enormous salary bill that Kevin Thelwell has done a great job of reducing.
Fortunately, with the contracts of five first-team players and two loans expiring this summer, it presents an opportunity to shed the relics of failed previous regimes.
Throughout that list, consisting of club hero Seamus Coleman and midfield stalwart Idrissa Gana Gueye, there are also some others certainly worth sanctioning an exit.
Andre Gomes marks an outstanding one, given he is yet to make a first-team appearance over the last season and a half despite commanding a £112k-per-week wage.
How has Ashley Young been playing for Everton this season?
Many anticipated that the 38-year-old, who joined on a free transfer, would provide sufficient backup in several roles at a discounted cost.
It was a wise and difficult decision to make.
That was, until Dyche began to exhibit an odd dependence on the full-back, who has disappointed Everton again this year.
With a declining physicality, unsurprisingly, and a rashness that belies his apparent experience, there is little that the £40k-per-week dud has offered to the Toffees across his six months in Merseyside.
In fact, his tenure has arguably been detrimental, having started 15 Premier League matches now and proved himself to be a liability more than once.
His two yellow cards in the Merseyside derby outlined this, but aside from that he has also committed one penalty and made two errors directly leading to goals.
For context, the entire squad have only made four, meaning he has been at fault for 50% of the goals conceded from unforced errors.
Thus, it should not be shocking that he has drawn criticism; journalist Paul Brown has called him a “accident waiting to happen.” To lessen his unpredictability, we even toyed with the notion of moving him to midfield.
With a fresh cash injection and new owners, perhaps Everton won’t have to worry about their squad depth when approving his and Gomes’ departures.
