Amid Arsenal being linked to a midfielder in January, Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist have now disagreed on the possibility of one signing.

On talkSPORT this morning, the two talked about the likelihood that Douglas Luiz, who plays for Aston Villa, will join Mikel Arteta’s team in January.

And they actually weren’t in unison on Luiz’s probable desire to join the club, with McCoist saying it wouldn’t be an easy decision.

However, Brazil was confident that the midfielder would be fully on board with a January move to Arsenal.

He said: “I don’t see that Ally. It’s a lot of money. He’s a good player and he’s pulling all the strings for them but for £100 million? No.

“I think if Arsenal came in, this is a good debate this one, because Villa are a top, top club.

“But Arsenal you could say top dogs in London, you could say that. They are very strong. I think it would be hard for him if the money came in and Villa said we have had a bit, it’s a lot, do you want to go. I think he would go.

Then Ally McCoist answered, “Well, there is a component of that.” If the team informs you that they have received an offer and they believe it to be a reasonable one, then I believe he will likely stay with Villa if they wish to keep him.

“I understand your point regarding Arsenal, but Villa is currently playing very well, so it’s not like it was three or four years ago when it would have been an automatic choice.”

Of course, at the prices mentioned it does seem improbable that Arsenal would even be able to make a move mid-season.

January movements are challenging because the club is known to operate under fairly rigorous financial fair play guidelines.

It appears that the team might have to sell before hiring any new players before the summer of next year.

Now that one hesitant exit has been linked to Mikel Arteta’s team, many fans would likely be angry.

But there will be difficult choices to be made as this Arsenal project moves forward.

And in January or the summer, certain compromises will have to be made in order to bring in a player such as Douglas Luiz.

But many will agree with Alan Brazil on this one in thinking Luiz would be very keen to join Arsenal.

After all, Luiz did just utter a few remarks that seemed to subtly acknowledge Arsenal.
