Former Everton star Andros Townsend has admitted that he isn’t surprised by the Toffees’ recent form, suggesting that Sean Dyche’s side were always going to begin to flourish.

The Toffees moved four points clear of the bottom three with a 2-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday 10 December, having plunged into the relegation zone following a 10-point deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

Townsend acknowledged that Dyche’s squad’s recent success is disappointing for Luton Town, but he labels them as a “top-half team” and thinks they will avoid the drop this season.

“I’m not surprised they’re doing that well because I know Sean Dyche as a manager; he’s a brilliant manager and he gets his teams organized,” he remarked in a talkSPORT interview on December 11, at 9:27. He now has both quality and quantity at Everton.

“I know they had a rough start, but talking to individuals at the club, they seemed quietly confident that they would start to succeed as soon as Jarrad Branthwaite, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Jack Harrison were fit.

“Unfortunately, as a Luton player right now, it’s difficult to see Everton succeed and escape the dropzone, but as you mentioned, they’re a top-half team without that 10-point deduction, and they’re playing like it .

Top half team

It has to be remembered that before news of Everton’s 10-point deduction arrived, Toffees supporters were beginning to look up the Premier League table and put relegation fears behind them after an excellent run of form up into the November international break.

Obviously, that point deduction changed the complexion of the table massively, but with three wins on the spin now in the Premier League, Dyche’s side are only one point away from undoing the damage done by their past financial mistakes.

Everton would be comfortably positioned in the top half of the table and any talk of possible relegation would have ceased long ago if the point deduction had not been granted.

Hopefully, it will remain the case even if the Toffees don’t keep up their recent stellar play

Although Townsend may find it unfortunate in terms of how it affects his new team, Luton, you would think that, despite his initial annoyance, he is delighted to see his old club triumph over hardship and will just hope that it doesn’t end up hurting his own club.
