The reason the West Ham board isn’t hurrying to offer

David Moyes a contract extension past it expires in June

of next year could be somewhat explained by the fact that

the team’s performance this season has been extremely hit and miss under Moyes.

Following their thrilling Europa Conference League title victory over

Fiorentina at the end of the previous season,

the Scot had a chance to really push the Hammers forward,

but if anything, the east Londoners have regressed.

It seems that one player is not happy with where he is currently being used either.

Although Jarrod Bowen’s manager recently switched him to a strike role,

Michail Antonio, a teammate, stated on the Footballers’ Football Podcast that

the England international would much rather stay out wide.

Antonio stated, “To be honest, I think he can do it (play as a striker).”

“I believe he possesses the attributes of a striker.

He can come in deep and collect the ball since he is strong and adept with it.

You also mentioned that he scores goals.

“I believe that he will most likely wind up there due to his evident talent and acumen

for knowing exactly where to stand within a box.

He also has an amazing finish to him.

So, I think he has the potential to become a striker.

“I don’t think he’s enjoying it at the moment.

Compared to out wide, he doesn’t get as much of the ball.

Also, you always have two centre halves at your back when you play centre forward.

On the other hand, you can drift into areas and go unnoticed when you’re on the wide.

If Antonio hadn’t been so lacklustre in front of goal (according to WhoScored,

he has only scored two goals in 2023–24,

the most recent of which was in August), Bowen might not have needed to

be transformed into a makeshift center-forward in the first place.

If Moyes manages to defy everyone’s expectations and remain in his current capacity,

Bowen’s willingness to continue playing the role for the team’s benefit or his wish to return to

his regular sentry duty must be called into doubt.
