The Times reports that Josh Doig will now finalize a “bumper move” to Sassuolo on Friday,

January 19, in response to Rangers’ interest. On the same day, the newspaper revealed on

its website that the left-back is movingfrom Hellas Verona to the other Italian team for £5 million,

plus a further £850,000 in bonuses. Despite the Scot’s earlier-expected move to Marseille falling through,

the Light Blues showed interest in him but finally decided not to make a formal bid. It is thought that Doig, 21,

was in Milan on Thursday night to complete his medical examination and “thrash out” the last aspects of his

personal terms  for a four and a half-year contract.

Expensive

Given how unclear Ridvan Yilmaz’s future is, Rangers would have definitely made an official push to lure

Doig to Ibrox if money hadn’t been an issue.

Given that the Turk was rumored to be close to moving to Verona earlier in the January transfer window,

it would have seemed to have worked out well for everyone if he had moved places.

However, with Doig costing more than £5 million, and Yilmaz refusing to leave

until the Gers receive an offer they can’t reject,

according to Philippe Clement (Sky Sports, January 17),

it seems to have been financially impracticable. The 22-year-old

Ibrox full-back seems to be attracting a lot of interest, but it doesn’t make sense

to let him go if the money won’t allow the team to make additional additions this month.

After his current contract expires in the summer, Borna Barisic’s future is also uncertain,

and Clement doesn’t want to be left without either and have to rush into finding someone.

The fact that Yilmaz has only shown glimpses over the last 18 months and hasn’t

been able to unseat the Croatian isn’t a very encouraging sign,

but since he is currently contributing, it might be best to keep him

on until the deadline and review the position in the summer.
