Why Jerry Jones believes Cowboys are better off with Mike McCarthy

Jerry Jones maintained the status quo in Dallas for a reason.

Despite the Cowboys’ first-round playoff elimination,

Mike McCarthy will coach retained for the 2024 campaign,

the team and its owner confirmed on Wednesday night.

In a statement, Jones, 81, revealed his reasons for believing in the head coach and claimed that McCarthy, 60,

wasn’t the only reason the Packers defeated them.

Jones even considered himself “accountable” for Sunday’s 48-32 defeat at home.

Mike’s career has undoubtedly shown postseason success at a high level,

and Jones expressed great optimism that it can go on.

Following yet another playoff collapse under McCarthy—who has a 1-3 postseason record with

the team since taking over as head coach in 2020—questions surfaced for the Cowboys.

Jones expressed his annoyance at the Cowboys’ defeat to Green Bay,

even though they went into the game as favourites.

“This is one of my [biggest] surprises since I’ve been involved in sport, period,” Jones remarked after the game.

“I understand how disappointed everyone is, to that extent.”

Under McCarthy, the squad has performed admirably in the regular season,

going 42-25 (.625 winning percentage) with three consecutive seasons of twelve wins or more.

Jones stated on Wednesday that the team is better off with McCarthy in light of this.

“I think this team is very close and capable of reaching our ultimate goals,

and having Mike McCarthy as our head coach will be the best step forward for us,” Jone stated.

“It is highly advantageous for the team to keep improving under Mike’s direction as our head coach.

In particular, Mike’s style of team leadership has resulted in numerous levels of success

this season for both our team as a whole and individual players.

“We will commit ourselves, in collaboration with Mike,

to translating his record of the highest regular season winning percentage among all

Cowboys head coaches into accomplishing our postseason objectives.”

This is in line with what quarterback Dak Prescott said following the defeat.

With a league-high 36 touchdown passes and 410 completions this season,

the signal-caller qualified for his third Pro Bowl and entered the MVP race.

Although he threw two interceptions in the Green Bay game,

he claimed that if McCarthy hadn’t taken over play-calling after

former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was fired in March,

he would not have been as successful this season.

Following the defeat on Sunday, Prescott remarked, “I’ve had the season that I’ve had because of him.”

“It is thanks to him that this team has achieved the success that they have.”
