Stephen Curry among top clutch performers

Breaking down the effectiveness of the players who turn it on in the clutch at the season’s midpoint.

De’Aaron Fox was a pretty obvious choice to win the inaugural Kia NBA Clutch Player of the Year honor because

1. Compared to other players, he scored 35 more critical points.

2. He made more than half of his crucial shots.

3. In the last minute of the fourth quarter or overtime,

he had eight buckets (tied for second most) to tie the game or seize the lead.

Remember that games that were within five points in the final five minutes are considered clutch games.

In the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime,

possessions with a score that was within five points are recorded as clutch stats.

Clutch plus-minus should also be disregarded.

As we approach the season’s halfway point on Thursday,

here’s a look at the league’s clutch leaders.

1. Stephen Curry: The leader in the clutch

Stephen Curry leads the pack with 113 clutch points as of Tuesday. Of course,

Curry gains from the fact that his team has played five more crucial games than any other club.

However,

he’s made more than half of his big shots (32 for 62, 52%), much like Fox did last season.

Even better,

among 51 players who have attempted at least 10 3-pointers, Curry is 19-for-38 (50%) on clutch shots,

ten more than any other player. The 50% ranking ties for the fourth-best performance.

In addition, he has the greatest record among 28 players who have tried at least 15 crucial free throws, going 30-for-31 (97%) on them.

It’s interesting to note that Fox,

the winner of the Clutch Award the previous year,

has the poorest marks among players who have attempted at least 10 clutch 3-pointers (0-for-13) and at least 15 clutch free throw attempts (12-for-20).

The following five players are ranked in order of total clutch points scored this season.

Damian Lillard, age 92

Wins points for making a buzzer-beating pull-up from 32 feet to transform a two-point deficit into a victory.

Below, more about Lillard.

Mikal Bridges (90)

has made more crucial free throws and shots than any two of his teammates combined.

Below is more information about him.

Placed fourth in terms of clutch usage rate (39.7%) and sixth in terms of clutch assists,

the team has only shot 19 out of 49 (39%), including 5 out of 21 (24%) from 3-point range, and has only lost by five points in the last five games.

DeMar DeRozan, who is 71

When the game is on the line, you can be sure he will have the ball in his hands.

Although he hasn’t made many big shots, he is 50% on clutch two-pointers,

2-for-3 on clutch threes, and more than 80% on clutch free throws.

71-year-old Nikola Jokic

MVP voting may definitely take clutch performance into consideration. Jokic is third in clutch use rate,

has a defining clutch moment, and has made 54% of his clutch shots. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (53 points on 59% shooting) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (65 points on 53% shooting)
