In a long-overdue recognition of his exceptional career, former Oakland Raiders cornerback Lester Hayes was finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday night, capping off a career marked by two Super Bowl victories and five Pro Bowl selections. Hayes, known for his dominant play in the 1970s and 1980s, had been a finalist for the Hall of Fame several times before his eventual selection this year.

The announcement brought a wave of nostalgia for Raiders fans, many of whom remember Hayes’ aggressive coverage and iconic use of sticky substances on his gloves—giving rise to his famous “Stickum” technique that helped him intercept 39 passes during his career. Hayes’ legacy was cemented during his pivotal role in the Raiders’ victories in Super Bowls XV and XVIII, where his lockdown defense was crucial in securing both championships.

In his emotional acceptance speech, Hayes reflected on his long road to Canton, acknowledging the years of waiting and the many missed opportunities. But in a surprising twist, he also addressed the current state of the Raiders, expressing concern over the team’s recent struggles. “As proud as I am of the past, the Raiders of today need to remember who they are and what they stand for,” Hayes remarked. “It’s time to bring that Raider Pride back. We’ve got to be a team that strikes fear, a team that plays with heart and grit.”
