Who Is Left On The New Orleans Saints’ Offensive Coaching Staff Amid Major Changes?

The New Orleans Saints have had a busy day as they have made multiple changes to their offensive coaching staff.

The team’s largest action came when offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael was let go.

It was a difficult decision to make after eighteen years,

but one that was required given the team’s offensive inconsistencies during the previous two seasons.

The Saints also fired offensive assistant Bob Bicknell and wide receivers coach Kodi Burns.

Burns in particular was unexpected given that both entered the game with an emphasis on wide receivers,

so their success as a young position group was unexpected.

The Saints’ crew was affected by more than just their coaches’ departure.

Joel Thomas, the running backs coach for the New York Giants, made the same decision.

The Saints had the option to block this play but decided against it,

suggesting that they might have been trying to take a chance there anyhow.

Quarterbacks’ coordinator and pass-catcher Ronald Curry

Curry joined the Saints in 2019 as their coach.

Along with working with wide receivers, instructing quarterbacks,

and overseeing the passing game for the last two years,

he has served in a variety of capacities on the offensive coaching staff.

He will definitely be given serious consideration for the team’s vacant offensive coordinator position,

but since the organisation isn’t keeping onto many members of the current staff,

they might be searching for a new viewpoint.

Coach of the offensive line, Doug Marrone

This is Marrone’s second visit to the Big Easy.

From 2006 to 2008, he oversaw offensive plays for the Saints.

He later rejoined the organisation in 2022 as the protection unit coach.

Regretfully, the offensive line has deteriorated and the Saints are now rather concerned about it.

Marrone is frequently mentioned as one of the coaches who may yet be leaving this offseason as a result.

However, it should come as no surprise that he is still employed at

this time given his 31 years of NFL coaching expertise.

Coach of Tight Ends, Clancy Barone

The worries along the offensive line hampered Barone’s unit early in the season.

Jimmy Graham, Foster Moreau, and Juwan Johnson—three Saints tight ends,

became more reliable players as the season progressed.

Graham’s second term with New Orleans appears to be coming to a conclusion,

and Barone—a coach who has developed Hall of Fame players at the position,

should be trusted to continue building this team and any new talent that might join the roster.

Kevin Carberry: Line Assistant for Offence

Carberry spent two seasons as the offensive line coach for the Los Angeles Rams,

including their 2021 Super Bowl victory season, before joining the Saints in 2023.

Carberry has the expertise to be a possible in-house replacement

if Marrone is let go at any point during this offseason.

Offensive Assistants

Jahri Evans: Worked closely with the Saints offensive line alongside Marrone.

Started as a training camp intern in 2022, entered full-time coaching this past season.

Kevin Petry: Worked closely with Carmichael.

Focused on quarterbacks in 2022 and moved to working with wide receivers in 2023.

With Burns having been moved on from,

Petry may be under consideration for a position coach gig should he continue to climb.

Jordan Traylor: After two seasons as a scouting assistant,

Traylor joined the defensive coaching staff as a defensive assistant.

In 2023 he moved over to the offensive side of the ball working with Barone and the tight end group.

D.J. Williams: Has been with the Saints for five seasons now as the offensive assistant working with quarterbacks.

Signal caller Derek Carr credited Williams at the end of the season for

doing extra work with him and running drills to help get the offense and quarterback in sync.

Williams was also one of the quarterbacks coaches at the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Darren Rizzi deserves a mention in this article as well,

even though he is primarily known for being the team’s coordinator of special teams.

As the team’s assistant head coach, Rizzi contributes far more to the staff than is typically acknowledged.

As the assistant head coach for the second year running,

Rizzi has not slowed down at all. According to Rick Gosselin’s yearly rankings,

his special teams unit has finished in the top five in five of the last six seasons despite him dividing his attention between the two responsibilities.
