New Orleans Saints Re-Sign 13 Players, Exclude Three from 2023 Squad
The New Orleans Saints made a significant roster move when they signed 13 members of their 2023 practice squad to reserve/future contracts in anticipation of the highly anticipated 2024 campaign.
Three players, nevertheless, have not had their contracts promptly renewed by the team:
rookie receiver Shaquan Davis, wide receiver Marquez Callaway, and offensive lineman Colby Gossett.
Recognising Future and Reserve Contracts
The majority of reserve/future contracts are minimum-wage arrangements that guarantee a player a spot on the team’s 90-man offseason roster. In the NFL, these contracts are regular operating procedure; they allow teams to keep promising players without having to pay high salaries. Notably, once practice squad contracts expire, the Saints will still be able to scout and sign other players in the league notwithstanding their most recent action.
The Case of the Excluded Trio
Gossett, Callaway, and Davis did not receive new contract offers right away, but this does not mean that their time with the Saints is over. After other matters have been taken care of, the team is still free to negotiate with them. Among the three, Saints supporters are particularly curious about Davis’ exclusion from the list of re-signed players.
Shaquan Davis: A Rising Rookie Star
During the 2023 preseason, South Carolina State’s Shaquan Davis—an undrafted rookie—made quite a stir. Davis’ performance from the slot position was impressive, with seven receptions for 101 yards, which made him a fan favourite. His attractiveness was further enhanced by his remarkable 6-foot-5 height and 215 pounds of weight. Unfortunately, Davis’ encouraging growth was halted by an injury sustained mid-season. Rumour has it that Davis, Gossett, and Callaway might make a comeback to compete for roster places in the 2024 season.
