Analysis: After another playoff failure, only Bill Belichick can save Cowboys

On TV, Jimmy Johnson exuded more enthusiasm for victory than any Dallas Cowboy did on the pitch.

To save his team, Jerry Jones should now look to another legendary coach.

The rumours surrounding Bill Belichick have intensified. Even though Mike McCarthy hasn’t been fired yet,

he is already the clear favourite to become Dallas’ next coach.

That may not be far off after a lacklustre showing against Green Bay on Sunday.

In a wild-card game against Green Bay, Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons,

and the other NFC East champs did not show up.

Since the NFL switched to a 14-team playoff structure in 2020,

the Cowboys became the first No. 2 seed to lose to a No. 7 seed.

It was far from it. The Cowboys felt humiliated.

In a game they led 27-0 and 48-16, Jordan Love and the Packers dominated Dallas 48-32,

destroying Dan Quinn’s defence in the process.

The Cowboys’ 16-game winning streak came to an end as they lost at home for

the first time since the 2022 season opener.

After his team’s most recent playoff defeat, Jones must be losing his patience.

The 81-year-old owner, who was watching from his apartment, was shocked and incensed.

This fall, he observed, “seems like the most painful” playoff defeat he has ever experienced.

Jones remarked, “This is beyond my comprehension.”

The score did not accurately reflect the quality of the performance.

The Cowboys were uninspired, lacked enthusiasm, and had no strategy to counter Green Bay.

Excited during the Fox halftime show, Johnson is the Hall of Fame coach who guided Dallas to two

Super Bowl championships in the mid-1990s and was just enshrined into the team’s ring of honour.

Johnson glared into the camera, saying,

“You get your rear end in there and you play the way you know how to play.”

The ‘Boys didn’t receive his message.

In the second half, they lacked inspiration just as much as in the first.

It appeared even less unbalanced after the garbage-time scores were added at the conclusion.

The Cowboys became the only team led by McCarthy to win 12 games in

the regular season three years in a row without making it to the conference finals.

For America’s Team, the Super Bowl drought will now stand at 29 years.

Jones must be thinking about making a shift.

Prescott and Parsons are two of his five second-team All-Pros on a great squad that includes four first-team players.

But when the pressure mounted against the Packers, everyone gave way.

Two interceptions, including a pick-6, were thrown by Prescott.

The squad had no sacks, while Parsons only had one solo tackle and one QB hit.

In short, no one on the Cowboys performed their job duties. Belichick wouldn’t stand for that.

He established a culture of teamwork and won six Super Bowls in 24 seasons,

establishing a dynasty in New England. Dallas sorely needs to absorb a lot of his “do your job” attitude.

It’s true that after Tom Brady left the Patriots, Belichick was unable to win.

On both sides of the ball, though, he would have Prescott and a formidable supporting cast.

In the NFL, coaching counts. McCarthy, Quinn,

and everyone else on the Dallas sideline were outwitted by Matt LaFleur. Love and the other young,

inexperienced players performed his game plan flawlessly.

Following Dallas’ defeat at the hands of Green Bay,

the Detroit Lions defeated the Rams 24-23 to progress to the divisional round.

This was the team’s second and first postseason triumph in 65 years.

Coach Dan Campbell, who took over one of the poorest teams in the league and

turned it into a winner in just three seasons, gave them new life.

“Everyone around you has to be doing their job at a high level and you have to be able to trust them in order for you to be able to do something greater than yourself,”

Campbell stated. It’s unique. Man, it’s unlike anything else.

We do what we do for that reason. It’s not the money.

It’s all about teamwork, rivalry, and being the greatest of the best as a whole.

After a contentious home defeat to Dallas in Week 17 that cost them the No. 2 seed,

the Lions were hoping to play the Cowboys again the next week. Given that the Cowboys bungled it,

they will still receive the second home game.

The Eagles and Buccaneers’ Monday night game winner will be hosted by Detroit.

Regarding the Cowboys, Jones must determine the best route to

win another Lombardi trophy while the players begin yet another early vacation.

Calling Belichick on the phone is the first step.
