T.J. Watt Named Defensive Player of the Year Finalist

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers star outside linebacker T.J. Watt has been named a finalist for the NFL’s prestigious Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) award. This announcement comes after a dominant 2023 season that solidified Watt’s reputation as one of the league’s most disruptive defenders.

Watt finished the season with a league-leading 19 sacks, marking the third time in his career he has achieved this milestone. In addition to his sack total, Watt tied a personal best with 68 total tackles, recorded 10 tackles for loss, and delivered 36 quarterback hits. His ability to impact games extended to the turnover battle, as he secured three fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown, and added an interception to his impressive stat line.

Watt also showcased his versatility in pass coverage, defending eight passes—matching a career high. His all-around performance anchored the Steelers’ defense and helped them remain one of the league’s most formidable units.

This is not uncharted territory for Watt, who previously earned DPOY honors in 2021. A win this year would make him one of the few players in NFL history to claim the award multiple times, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest defensive players of his generation.

The winner of the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year award will be announced during the NFL Honors ceremony, held just before the Super Bowl. Steelers fans will be eagerly awaiting the chance to see their defensive leader add yet another accolade to his illustrious career.

Stay tuned for updates on Watt’s pursuit of his second DPOY title.
