In a competitive field, respect from one’s peers is frequently the highest honour one can obtain.

This is particularly valid for athletes who are engaged in elite competition.

The NFL Player’s Association unveiled their second-annual All-Pro team choices,

which were chosen by players, on Wednesday.

Voting for themselves or their teammates was prohibited for them.

Naturally, the three Baltimore Ravens players who made the list were the most important.

Inside linebacker Roquan Smith was selected for the second consecutive year,

while rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson and safety Kyle Hamilton made their debuts.

This occurs just one week after each of the seven players on the squad selected for the 2023 Pro Bowl were named.

Jackson elevated his game in 2023, but his numbers don’t fully capture the essence of what

was perhaps his second career MVP-caliber campaign.

The three-time Pro Bowler set career highs in yards (3,678), completion percentage (67.2),

passing attempts (457), and completions (307).

He concluded with a team-high 821 rushing yards,

a league-high 5.5 yards per attempt, and 29 total touchdowns (24 passing and 5 rushing).

“Having the respect of my peers means a lot,” Jackson remarked.

“Those people we’re attempting to defeat, they’re attempting to defeat us. It’s a privilege.

One of the Ravens’ biggest breakout players this season was Hamilton.

He delivered an even better season after a promising first year, living up to the preseason hype.

Regardless of position, the 2022 first-round selection solidified

his status as one of the league’s best defensive playmakers.

One of the Ravens’ biggest breakout players this season was Hamilton.

the 2022 first-round selection solidified his status as one of the league’s best defensive playmakers.

In a single season, he became the first NFL defender to record four interceptions and

at least ten tackles for loss in almost a decade.

Tyrann Mathieu, an All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler,

was the last player to accomplish this in 2015. At every level of the defence,

Hamilton made plays all over the field.

He ended with career highs in total tackles (81), sacks (3), and pass breakups (13).

“It was definitely cool to see,” Hamilton remarked.

Since I can remember, I’ve dreamed of being an All-Pro,

but it will always remain a dream until it comes true.

Being voted on by my peers is really great, and that’s the most significant viewpoint,

in my opinion. It is an honour to even be chosen by guys I have looked up to and continue to look up to,

and to be included among the best in the league.

Smith, who was acquired by the Ravens via trade at the previous season’s midseason deadline,

recently completed his first full season with the team.

The two-time Pro Bowler finished with 1.5 sacks,

one interception, a forced fumble, and a team-high 158 total tackles—the sixth-most in the league.

The sixth-year veteran is this year’s pulse, tone-setter, and emotional leader,

even though schematically he is the most important player.

None of the three Ravens players’ inclusion can be disputed,

but there was one egregious omission and possibly two others.

Justin Madubuike, a fourth-year defensive tackle, had a breakout season this year,

leading all interior defensive linemen in the league with 13 sacks, a career high.

He did not make the list despite setting a record by playing in 11 straight games with at least a half-sack.

In the last year of his rookie contract, fourth-year safety Geno Stone also had a breakout year,

leading the AFC in interceptions and setting a career high of seven.

That was the most among all safeties in the league,

although he was passed over in favour of Jessie Bates. Zack Martin,

the right guard for the Dallas Cowboys, is a future Hall of Famer,

but Kevin Zeitler, a 12-year veteran with the Ravens,

had his best season to date. He and Stone were both passed over for the Pro Bowl.

Wednesday’s awards for Jackson and Hamilton went beyond All-Pro recognition.

Members of the local media who cover the squad named them the Media Good Guy and the MVP of the Ravens team, respectively.

Hamilton remarked, “I really respect everything that (the media) guys do on a daily basis,

so it was surprising to me.”

“It’s a grind; you guys have a job to do just like I do, and I appreciate you guys,”

I said, aware that people all over the world depend on your knowledge.
