Gordon Dalziel has drawn a comparison between Ally McCoist’s signing with

the Rangers and Sam Lammers’ current predicament.

During his first few months at Ibrox after moving from Sunderland in 1983,

the former Gers favourite was “booed left, right, and centre,” according to the pundit,

who went on to become the “biggest hero ever,”

during an appearance on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Tuesday, January 9.

He continued by saying that because Dutch striker Lammers is on loan at Utrecht,

players don’t receive as much time as they used to,

but he thinks the 26-year-old might still be useful for the Light Blues in the future because he is a “decent player.”

“I remember when I worked at Rangers and Ally McCoist entered the building,” Dalziel reminisced.

He was being jeered everywhere for six or eight months,

but he went on to become the greatest hero to have ever played for the Rangers.

“But in the present day, you do not have the luxury of time.

The competition is fierce right now, so you come in for huge fees.

I believe they will provide you that three-month grace.

But when you consider Lammers’ thirty or so games,

I believe it’s sufficient. Rangers supporters, I believe, have made up their minds.

But see, for the boy’s benefit, he might leave, or he might become overconfident because,

in theory, there is a respectable player there.

Not likely

Though it isn’t thought that Lammers’ loan agreement with Utrecht includes a buyout clause,

it doesn’t appear that he will be staying with Rangers in the future.

Dalziel talked about McCoist turning things around,

but that was a very different era in which signings were far cheaper and salaries

were a small fraction of what players make today.

It is expected that new players will have an almost immediate influence,

especially at a team like the Gers where every game counts and the stakes are so high.

The Dutchman, who has made just 31 appearances at Ibrox since joining from Atalanta over the summer,

has only managed two goals and two assists.

That creates an incredible amount of pressure, which some players just cannot take.

The Light Blues manager will likely have hoped to have a stronger substitute in place for

the forward by the time that rolls around, but a solid performance back

home with the Dutch club might convince Philippe Clement to give

the forward another chance in Glasgow the following season.
