Chris Sutton has hinted that Celtic would have to acquire a new center-half since Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke, who cost £7.5 million apiece, are already “surplus to requirements” under Brendan Rodgers.

One of the three centre halves that Celtic acquired in the summer of 2023 has already bid farewell. Nat Phillips made just six games in the Scottish Premiership before his Liverpool loan period ended.

Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki, two players that cost The Hoops £3 million and £4.5 million, respectively, may not be far behind either as they struggle to establish themselves in green and white.

Celtic icon not convinced by £7.5m duo

The position of centre half is confusing. What’s happening over there? When questioned by Sky Sports about the team’s January transfer requirements, Celtics icon Chris Sutton said.

“Liam Scales has seized his chance, but Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke, who Celtic paid £7.5 million for, appear unnecessary.”

Lagerbielke, a Swedish international, will always remember his Champions League victory over Feyenoord at stoppage time, although his debut came on New Year’s Day when he came off the bench at St. Mirren, marking the first time in his 15 Premier League appearances.

At least for Nawrocki, things appear to be getting better after Brendan Rodgers was impressed by his rather expensive transfer from Legia Warsaw during the Old Firm derby triumph against Rangers. Nawrocki took advantage of the opportunity to step in for an injured Cameron Carter-Vickers.

A watershed in Maik Nawrocki’s career?

Recently, Rodgers stated of Nawrocki, “I know what I have.” It is regrettable that he did not play a little earlier. On his way back, he started to have little niggles (from injuries). After a few weeks of training, he began to experience soreness when he wasn’t participating.

But that demonstrates my complete faith in him. When he first came in, I felt he was good.

There were a few instances where he might have jumped in a little bit, but it is simply him regaining his timing. He is assertive and did well on it. He will play a significant role for us later in the season.

HITC is aware that although Celtic could have to go elsewhere for defensive reinforcements, especially at left-back where Alexandro Bernabei’s future is unknown, the Glasgow giants might choose to bolster their roster at several other positions.

Celtic is considering the names of Ecuadorian midfielder Oscar Zambrano and Hearts attacker Lawrence Shankland.
