Lewis Ferguson Rangers transfer ‘regret’ as pundit baffled by missed Ibrox chance
Lewis Ferguson was never pursued by
the Rangers before he signed with
Bologna, and Alan Hutton says he’s puzzled by this.
Ferguson, the son of former Rangers star
Derek, arrived from Aberdeen in 2022
and has since made a name for himself
in Italy. The 24-year-old has elevated his
play to a new level and surpassed Denis
Law’s record with Tornio to become the
highest-scoring Scot in Serie A history.
Juventus is taking notice of the former
Hamilon Accies youngster, who has
scored 11 goals in the Italian top division thus far.
Hutton, a lifelong supporter of Rangers,
is still in shock that the Light Blues
passed up a chance to sign the Scotland
international while he was still at
Pittodrie. Furthermore, Hutton
encouraged the Ibrox manager to look
for homegrown talent and cautioned
Philippe Clement against making the
same error as his predecessors.
He said: “There has to be a bit of regret
there. There have been a few players
who have gone abroad and done really
well that probably Rangers and Celtic
would have looked at in the past.
“Lewis Ferguson is unquestionably
among them. It cannot be easy now that
he has left. But if you listen to him now,
when he’s doing interviews, you can
hear that he’s comfortable and speaking the language.
“He’s battling to make the Scotland squad
and is only getting stronger. Rangers
would be better right now with someone
like that on staff. I believe they have
therefore been let down. There have
been others as well, such Aaron Hickey and Josh Doig, who went over.
“There have been so many. Is that the
reason – that they just preferred other
targets or did maybe they didn’t trust
them because they were a little bit
young? I don’t know. I think for Rangers
and Celtic to be looking at bringing these guys in makes them better.”
