Rangers consider defender loan exit in January, clubs line up

According to the Daily Record, Rangers are thinking over loan alternatives for defender Jay Hogarth, with teams from the Scottish Championship and League One showing interest.

According to the newspaper’s transfer blog [9 January, 11:19], Rangers think the defender can advance further with

more frequent first-team play.

After the defender enjoyed success in the Scottish Championship with Alloa Athletic, the Ibrox club is now trying to

find a method to get him back on the field on a regular basis.

An ambiguous future

There will be concerns about whether he will stay at Ibrox in the long run, even if it is said that Rangers think he can advance in his career and abilities if given additional playing time away from the team on loan.

As demonstrated by Ross McCausland this season, he is past the normal age at which a young talent should break

through into the first team, and a loan to the Scottish Championship or even League One would not be appropriate

for him at this point in his development.

The evidence that he can step up and take on that position would already be there if his future at Rangers was with

the first team; but, another Championship loan would not be on par with that.

The question of why they don’t just let him go on a permanent deal immediately rather than having him spend

further loan spells abroad will still stand, though, if the plan is for him to continue developing away from Rangers

before being sold in the end.
