The 18-year-old defender has previously worked with Forest Academy head coach Craig Mulholland,

which may have influenced the agreement, the newspaper revealed via their transfer blog on January 9.

The tabloid does not reveal the transfer fee;

however, Transfermarkt reports that his contract expires in May,

which would have given the English team the opportunity to pounce on him before then.

It’s unfortunate to see him go.

It’s always sad to see an academy product go from Ibrox,

particularly when he was showing so much promise that a Premier League team was enticed to make an offer for him.

Newton’s two-year contract offer from Forest indicates that they believe he has some long-term potential.

Although he will probably join their academy squad for the time being,

the ultimate goal is for him to play in the first team.

Newton had not yet played for Rangers as a senior,

but he had played for Rangers B during the previous season’s Lowland League competition, giving him a taste of football outside of the academy.

More information about this transfer will probably become available eventually,

but the main queries that fans will have after hearing this news will be about the potential transfer fee and whether Rangers tried to keep him at Ibrox.
