According to Kirk Broadfoot, Rangers have every reason to aim for a domestic treble this year

Despite losing the penultimate Old Firm rivalry match of 2023 against Celtic at the beginning of the year,

Philippe Clement’s team has already won the Viaplay League Cup this season and is currently competing for the Scottish Premiership title.

When football resumes from the winter break,

there will be the Scottish Cup and Rangers vying for a spot in the Europa League last 16.

Although former Ibrox defender Broadfood thinks his old team will succeed in the crowded fixture calendar,

Clement and his squad will have a demanding schedule.

When asked if the treble will happen, Broadfoot said, “I don’t see why not.”

They are clearly still in the Scottish Cup, they have one up on them, and the league is unquestionably theirs.

The Rangers as a team ought to aim for the triple crown.

I believe the new manager has arrived and is off to a strong start in his role at the team.

“I believe they’ll most likely get stronger once again this month.

This year’s league competition should be close, in my opinion.

Because they are evenly balanced, I don’t see either team winning.

“The manager is the best person for the job right now. I envision Rangers battling to the very end.

He’s already furious after being undefeated in his first 16 games, as you can see. That says it all.

It’s important to keep in mind that he still needs to add his own players.

The fact that he already has a trophy in the cabinet is a great place to start.

That’s significant for any squad when a new manager joins the team.

“Winning any trophy is good, but at that point in the season,

the League Cup gives you that winning feeling.”

It might inspire the team to keep going and aim to win additional games.

But the league is the most important one. They will definitely challenge Celtic this year, in my opinion.

“It will be close, but I believe Rangers have the team that can win it and a manager who can push Celtic all the way.”

Broadfoot would have delighted to have played for Belgian manager Clement,

and he’s been surprised by the immediate effect he’s had on the Ibrox team since Michael Beale left.

Despite multiple injury setbacks and using a team he had no influence over when it came to recruiting,

the 49-year-old has strengthened Rangers’ defence and enhanced their attacking performance.

“I think he’s got an aura about him,” Broadfoot added. It’s evident that the team values him.

You see the game in which, after about thirty minutes, he removed Todd Cantwell from the game.

That demonstrates to you that he doesn’t hesitate to make decisions quickly.

He will bench any player, regardless of identity, if he believes they are not doing their share of the work.

Before he even came, you could see he knew what he was doing because he had won the title in Belgium.

He speaks and works in a style that I find appealing.

“I believe that when Ange Postecoglou and Celtic were up here, it was the same.

You might identify with him. He says it as it is: white is white, black is black.

I believe that is relatable to fans. That’s their preference.

From a Rangers perspective,

Broadfoot is as much looking forward to domestic domination as he is to seeing the Govan team return to the Europa League.

Just three rounds separate the club from reaching the same point as they did in 2022, when Giovanni van Bronckhorst famously guided his team all the way to the championship.

Speaking on the significance of playing in Europe, Broadfoot stated:

“You have to be looking to battle on all fronts, including Europe, at teams like Rangers and Celtic.

Rangers have a large enough roster to meet the needs. The fans, in my opinion, also want it.

The players undoubtedly want to be engaged in combat on all fronts. Saying something like

“let’s leave Europe so we can focus on the league” is never a good idea.

“You ought to be battling for the two.

They do, in my opinion, have a large enough squad to consider doing that. Already,

the European run is going well. It was amazing to win that group and not make it to the playoffs.

Broadfoot, who played for Walter Smith’s team that defeated Zenit Saint Petersburg in the 2008 Uefa Cup final,

questioned whether Rangers could win the championship once more.

He continued, saying, “It will be a tough ask, there’s no getting away from that.”

Just take a peek at a few of the clubs they might play in the upcoming round.

With the calibre of clubs I’m dropping out of the Champions League,

it’s probably even harder now.

“In the past, we faced Fiorentina in the semifinals,

and the other matchup featured Bayern Munich and Zenit St. Petersburg, who ultimately emerged victorious.”

It’s gotten harder, if anything, but you can never say never.

Given that it has occurred twice recently, it is very conceivable.

“A small amount of luck in the drawing never hurts.” A few years back,

they advanced to the final and defeated Borussia Dortmund,

confirming their status as the clear favourites to win.

It’s a positive habit for them to have of winning knockout matches after Christmas.

“It gets ingrained to win games in any competition. Although they lost the Old Firm match,

they quickly turned things around against Kilmarnock.

Thus, the club has an embedded winning attitude.

That can only serve them well.

“I hope to see them in another European final.”
