Many teams have struggled to find consistency this season but there have been plenty of standout individuals

Managers frequently say that, and it’s true, either in an effort to lower expectations or to reassure staff that things

can be turned around. January is not a winning month.

However, it’s a good idea to take stock approximately halfway through. Particularly when we still want to speak

football and the Premiership is on winter vacation!

We’ve made the decision to try our hand at selecting a team of the season thus far. It wasn’t easy, with Rangers

faltering under Michael Beale before picking up steam under Philippe Clement, and champions Celtic at the top

once more but displaying inconsistency.

Hearts started off poorly but are currently comfortably in third place, while teams like Kilmarnock, St. Mirren, and Dundee are performing well above their league level and Aberdeen and Hibs have been disappointing.

This is our attempt at selecting an XI.

Butland, Jack

How excellent the Englishman has turned out to be a sign. has produced some huge saves both domestically and in

Europe, and he leads the league in shutouts.

Tavernier James

Here, not much explanation is necessary. Year after year, he consistently scores goals and provides assists. has

made three appearances on the PFA team of the year and is expected to be a candidate once more. If Aberdeen had

been higher in the division, Nicky Devlin might have defeated the captain!

Frankie Kent

Hearts’ most valuable summer acquisition, second only to Lawrence Shankland in terms of importance. Since his

arrival, they have rarely conceded from crosses or set-pieces, having been a soft touch the previous season.

Owen Beck

A huge blow for Dundee when Liverpool recalled the talented left-back. Tony Docherty’s men have been the surprise package in the league and he has been their star player in that, arguably their most creative outlet from left-back
