What NFL Insiders are saying about Mike McCarthy’s future in Dallas

What NFL Insiders are saying about Mike McCarthy’s future in Dallas

Since 1994–1996 the Dallas Cowboys

have not finished in the double digits for

three consecutive seasons. Head coach

Mike McCarthy has led Dallas to three

consecutive 12-win seasons, just one

victory away from that feat in just his

fourth season with the organization. Is it

really possible, though, that this record

won’t be sufficient to keep the coach

employed through 2024 and beyond?

Diana Russini discussed the head

coaching landscape throughout the

league in her most recent piece for The

Athletic. Russini discusses the Cowboys’

position—starting Week 18 with a chance

to win the division—at the conclusion of

the article. She added that the Cowboys

had discussed how the New England

Patriots of 2019 couldn’t just sleepwalk into the No. 2 spot.

If Dallas were to lose the NFC East and

fall all the way to fifth, their postseason

road would be much more difficult as the

No. 5 seed. After traveling to see who

wins the NFC South, if they advance, they

would play the formidable San Francisco

49ers. Even though the Patriots hosted a

playoff game in 2019 after losing to the

Dolphins in Week 18, they were defeated

by the Tennessee Titans, who went on to win the AFC Championship.

The idea is to position yourself for the

greatest route to the Super Bowl, and the

Cowboys would be best served by

hosting at least two of the playoff games

at home, given that Tom Brady was the

last QB to defeat Dallas at home in Week 1 of 2022.

Would McCarthy be in hot water going

into the postseason if they lost in

Washington? If you don’t trust one NFL

insider, ESPN’s Adam Schefter also

discussed the importance of this playoff

run and how it’s directly related to

McCarthy’s prospects of staying in the

league, based on what he’s heard from The Star.

As Schefter states, fair or unfair, the

standard in Dallas is to win

championships. If McCarthy can’t

accomplish that with clearly the best

team he’s had since taking over, then

everything seems open for discussion.
