Ollie Watkins, a striker for Aston Villa, was perplexed to discover that Tottenham’s home stadium is simply known

as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs moved from White Hart Lane to their 62,850-seat stadium, which is located on the same site as the former

stadium, approximately five years ago.

Tottenham’s relocation to the London Stadium has gone well, in contrast to the problems that supporters of certain

other clubs have encountered when they have shifted stadiums (such as West Ham’s move from Upton Park to the

stadium).

That could be as a result of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s ability to capture the spirit of White Hart Lane.

Now that fans are excited about the new project under Ange Postecoglou, we have seen just how boisterous and

atmospheric the stadium can be, and many have labelled the stadium the best in the Premier League (talkSPORT)

However, with the naming rights of the stadium yet to be sold, the venue is still called by its generic name, which

came as a surprise to Watkins.

The striker was taking part in the popular game ‘lies’ along with his Villa teammate Matty Cash on Sky Sports and he

was asked to name eight Premier League Stadiums inside 30 seconds.

He failed to name Spurs’ stadium and when he was informed that they are just called the Tottenham Hotspur

Stadium, Watkins responded “Oh my God. They need to get a new name, don’t they?”

Potential naming rights sponsors can feel secure knowing that there is value in the transaction because the generic

name, “Tottenham Hotspur Stadium,” has stuck. Daniel Levy and the Spurs board will adore this.

The Spurs management may have been concerned that supporters and commentators would still refer to it as White

Hart Lane, which would have turned off prospective sponsors because it can be difficult for a new sponsorship name

to become accepted in situations like that.

For instance, many people still refer to the Brentford Community Stadium rather than the Gtech Community

Stadium, and Newcastle’s stadium was still known as St. James Park even after it was temporarily renamed the

Sports Direct Arena.
