Will Browns DC Jim Schwartz Pursue A Head Coaching Job This Offseason?

Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, the brains behind the Browns’ top-ranked defense,

answered inquiries regarding his future as a head coach.

In terms of yards allowed per game, passing yards allowed per game, and defensive EPA,

the Browns defense presently leads the league.

They rank in the top 10 in several other statistics, including sacks, interceptions,

and the amount of rushing yards allowed each game.

That team has had a successful season under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

And Cleveland is 11-5 and headed to the playoffs for just the third time in this century,

in large part due to their domination on that side of the ball.

Even if, Browns fans don’t want to hear it, those kinds of figures will be noted, and for weeks now,

rumors have been circulating that Schwartz might be interviewed for head coaching positions this summer.

He made his first appearance as a head coach on Thursday,

and although he expressed his affection for Cleveland,

he did not completely rule out the possibility.

“I’m really happy here,” Schwartz said at the start.

“I adore this organization, but I haven’t really talked about the Haslams or [general manager] Andrew Berry.

I have talked about Kevin. Cleveland is a city I adore.

It was such a wonderful vibe [on Thursday].

During my 31-year NFL career, that ranks among my top five atmospheres.

“But I’d say this, any job that you do, you always aspire to be top of that profession and I’m no different there.”

Naturally, Schwartz had already attempted his hand at head coaching from 2009 to 2013 with the Detroit Lions,

taking the run-down team to the postseason for the first time in more than ten years in 2011.

But after a 7-9 season, Schwartz was fired two seasons later.

One year later, he was back on the sidelines with the Buffalo Bills, this time as a defensive coordinator.

He later joined the Eagles staff in 2016 under head coach Doug Pederson,

and in 2018 he guided Philadelphia’s defense to a Super Bowl victory.

Although Schwartz is still in his first season as Cleveland’s defensive coordinator,

his influence on that side of the ball has already been seen as he has transformed the Browns defense,

which was among the worst in the league the previous season.

It remains to be seen if Schwartz receives substantial attention from organizations wanting to fill head coaching positions this season.

The Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders,

and Carolina Panthers now have three openings available; but, more could be added on Monday when the regular season comes to an end.

Even though he is happy with his current position,

the 57-year-old isn’t ruling out going back to the head coaching ranks.
