Report: GP2 out ‘several weeks’ for Warriors with hamstring injury
NBC Universal Productions, Inc.
Gary Payton II departed Tuesday’s
Warriors game with a left hamstring
injury that might keep him out of the
game for some time. This was his second
game back from a calf ailment.
The much-anticipated comeback of Gary
Payton II to the court was brief.
According to sources cited by Shams
Charania of The Athletic on Wednesday,
the Warriors guard will miss “several
weeks” due to a left hamstring strain.
Payton II sustained the injury Tuesday
night in the Warriors’ 121-115 win over
the Orlando Magic at Chase Center when
he was defending Magic point guard Cole
Anthony and then appeared to trip over
his leg and fall awkwardly before grabbing his left hamstring.
He grimaced and frustratingly ripped off
his headband and threw it before being
helped to the Warriors’ locker room.
Payton finished the game early due to an
injury, although he was a plus-10 with
two points and four rebounds. Speaking
with media after the game, Warriors
point guard Chris Paul expressed his
sympathy for his friend and highlighted
the significance of his efforts to the group.
Paul remarked, “It’s tough.” “He plays a
crucial role in our team. His intensity is
constant every day, every practice, every
game—even if people might not notice it.
His return to our team has been
invaluable to us. I hope it’s not anything
that will require a lot of time. It will just
be about getting as healthy as possible for him.
“He’s a competitor, I know how bad he
wants to play and how hard he’s been
working to get back out there. We’ll see
what happens but that’s unfortunate for
a guy like GP who works as hard as he does.”
The Warriors likely will share an official
update on Payton II’s status this week.
