Yilmaz has started each of the last four games under Philippe Clement but had reportedly been told he is free to leave the club during the transfer window.

“Verona very active, with incoming and outgoing negotiations, in these first hours of the January transfer market,” he wrote.

“The yellow and blues have targeted Ridvan Yilmaz, a Turkish left back born in 2001 owned by Glasgow Rangers.”

Rangers may have made a grave error in letting him go, since it is now clear why the team originally paid £4 million to bring him to Ibrox.

When he signed, it was odd that he couldn’t get a sniff under Giovanni van Bronckhorst. His luck didn’t improve when Michael Beale joined the team because Borna Barisic was always chosen.

But the Croatian has struggled with injuries and form himself this season and with just six months remaining on his contract, there is no reason why the club need to push Yilmaz out of the door.

His recent performances have shown that he is capable of playing to a very good level and that he works in Clement’s system too, so this seems like the best chance to give him a real run in the team and see what he can do.

Letting him go in this window will see us short in the position and need to reinvest, when the answer may well already be at the club.
