During his United Cup match against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego yesterday night,

The 35-year-old repeatedly whacked himself in the head with the butt of his racket during the second set,

Following a commanding 6-4 victory in the opening set,

Mannarino started to falter as Sonego made a move to break serve in an attempt to tie the match.

But the Italian’s momentum was stopped by the on-court medical emergency while they were up 30-0.

Mannarino lost a second straight point, and he became so enraged

that he repeatedly struck himself in the head with the handle of his racket.

The repeated hit immediately caused blood to flow,

bringing a trainer onto the floor and forcing France into a medical stoppage.

Rather than applying a bandage or plaster to guarantee that the match could go right away,

Mannarino’s staff attended to his cut and play only resumed until the bleeding had stopped.

In Sydney, Mannarino was able to regain his form after the medical break and won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

And France won the first place in Group D with to Caroline Garcia’s victory over Jasmine Paolini.

Even though Mannarino’s triumph was easy,

the Australian great Wally Masur was among those who criticised the veteran star for his self-inflicted injury.

“If [an injury] is self-inflicted, can you have a timeout?” he said to Nine. You are unable to hurt yourself, are you?
