Numerous names have already been brought up when Rangers need reinforcements up front, but previous target Jonson Clarke-Harris is noticeably absent.

The Peterborough United striker has been linked on a few occasions with a price tag once being quoted as high as £5m, with a contract set to expire and the 29-year old able to discuss a pre-contract agreement, his valuation is nowhere near as high now.

Rangers have chance to return for Jonson Clarke-Harris

As with Ivan Toney and Siriki Dembele, Peterborough know how much they want for one of their prized assets and any move to Ibrox for the hitman would come at a cost for Gers boss Philippe Clement.

He might be able to leave for nothing soon but, as confirmed by MacAnthony, they aren’t selling on the cheap.

“Turned down 300k, 400k and 450k so far. Goals aren’t cheap but *expletive deleted* takers think we are desperate for a dollar. Those days are gone.”

It’s a shame that Lawrence Shankland’s contract wasn’t in a similar position.

Although Shankland’s style of play is more ball-controlling, there are some similarities in terms of finishing ability.

They are similar in build and (lack of) speed, but few are more effective for the money when it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net.

Jonson Clarke-Harris might be 29 but, he is available and would offer an awful lot more than Kemar Roofe would over the rest of the season and has said that he is “interested” in a move before..

The issue is that this move should have been made a few seasons ago, at the latest.

As a first-choice option to improve the team and to replace Alfredo Morelos, probably not, but as one of four strikers to rotate and, in particular, score goals in Scotland?

Plenty of players have come up from England and struggled but the goals are the same size and Clarke-Harris scores all sorts.

He also has the physicality that is needed to cope with Scottish football.

With Ross Wilson as director of football, it’s a transfer that might just have been considered, now though, there is as much chance of Peterborough selling on the cheap than Rangers signing him.

Although Hearts might be looking for a striker soon….
