I made a brief argument on Tuesday for the Celtics to hold out until the NBA trade deadline.

I’ll make the counterargument today,

using some language that our online friends have provided.

Brian Robb, for instance, makes the argument that this squad is too good to not

put everything on the line in an attempt to win the championship.

Although it’s not a flawless squad,

this is the most competitive championship candidate this team has had in ten years.

Now that the team’s key players have shown their buy-in and sacrifices are being made all the way down the roster,

it is up to Brad Stevens and the Celtics front office to commit to this group even more.

When it comes to injuries,

this team’s own shortcomings might be the worst hindrance to their quest for an NBA championship at the moment.

The brass of this team must thus take use of the opportunity and implement safety measures to

maximise the title window this season and lower that risk.

That is a really good and persuasive point. Although this club is loaded with potential,

a few of its players have a history of ailments.

The team might find itself in a challenging situation if someone were to miss a significant amount of time.

Keeping the top seed going into the postseason would be extremely important,

as any edge could be beneficial. For brief appearances and situational requirements,

the role players further down the bench are fine. Beyond that,

and they would become vulnerable, especially throughout the postseason.

Thus, what would be the process for Brad Stevens to bolster this team?

Using the $6.2M TPE that Grant Williams developed this offseason is the most obvious course of action.

Jay King recommends looking into Saddiq Bey. He suggests a couple additional names as well.

There are a few more TPE targets that seem at least somewhat interesting.

With one and a half years remaining on their rookie contracts, first-round picks seldom get traded,

but Corey Kispert’s shooting could be useful elsewhere if the awful Washington Wizards consider offers for him.

If the Utah Jazz decide Kris Dunn is not a part of their future,

they could have an opportunity to acquire the talented perimeter defender on an expiring contract.

John Konchar was mentioned as a potential Celtics target by HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto,

but the Grizzlies might be reluctant to trade for anyone if

they start climbing the rankings with Ja Morant now available.

As is always the case with these matters, the cost is the deciding factor.

The Celtics should act quickly and throw in their lot if they can get a

valuable player without having to give up a lot in return—

and if the player is worth the player’s exponential tax cost.

The idea here could be that, given his history of trading picks,

Brad’s risk tolerance may be higher this year and he may be more prepared to put up draft cash than usual.

Although trades are difficult to come by and people like Woj anticipate a quiet trade deadline,

Stevens should still be searching everywhere for any edge to give this team.
