Despite how devastating their Saturday loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers felt,

the Cincinnati Bengals’ performance throughout the remainder of Week 16 was largely positive.

Denver Broncos lost against New England Patriots.

The Indianapolis Colts lost against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Houston Texans lost to the Cleveland Browns.

It would have been a perfect storm of other teams supporting the Bengals’ aspirations of qualifying for the NFL

Playoffs if the Buffalo Bills hadn’t held off the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Bengals are still substantially in charge of their own fate despite the loss.

The New York Times playoff simulator projects the Bengals have a 92% probability of making the postseason

if they can defeat the Chiefs on New Year’s Eve and defeat the Cleveland Browns to end the regular season.

It’s true that Kansas City is a football team that can be defeated.

On Christmas Day, they lost to the Las Vegas Raiders,

who had a rookie quarterback and an interim head coach.

Their offence hasn’t looked the same all season.

Even if the Bengals didn’t look well on Saturday, Kansas City is a weak club.

Cleveland’s game against the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football has

the potential to guarantee a spot in the playoffs.

Cleveland is scheduled to play in the tournament if they win.

There’s still (somehow) a chance for Cleveland to finish as the top AFC seed.

Having said that, Cleveland will be eliminated from contention if

the Baltimore Ravens defeat the Miami Dolphins in Week 17.

It seems highly likely that Cleveland will rest its starters in the regular-season finale now that

they have guaranteed themselves a playoff berth and the number one seed.

As painful as the Week 16 loss was,

winning the Bengals’ next two football games is the best way for them to qualify for the postseason.
