When it comes to NBA decision-making, the benefit of hindsight is a recurring theme,

and this is especially true with regard to the draft.

While some draft decisions are dubious from the start,

many don’t become fully apparent until years later.

Tyrese Haliburton, a star player for the Indiana Pacers, had a unique draft experience.

The Sacramento Kings selected Haliburton 12th overall in 2020,

but he did not become famous right away. Although there were indications of one,

Haliburton didn’t truly emerge as a 20 PPG scorer and 10 APG passer until he signed a contract with the Pacers.

Since then, his averages have increased to 24 PPG and 12 APG.

Now that Haliburton has achieved this level of success,

everyone is analysing who might have selected him in the draft.

The Golden State Warriors could have selected Haliburton or a number of other

superior players with the second overall pick in that draft—James Wiseman, to be exact.

Haliburton was questioned about whether he allowed himself to

think about getting picked by the Warriors by Tim Kawakami of The Athletic.

Indeed, Haliburton admitted to Kawakami.

“I thought I was going to be the pick if they were anywhere out of the top three,

so I was disappointed that they (had) the No. 2 pick.”

“That workout was like the best workout of my life,” Haliburton continued.

It seemed as though I had shot the ball’s cover.

However, I realised at the time that they would not be able to take me at two.

Haliburton did contemplate playing for Golden State,

but in this interview with Kawakami,

he finally came clean and said he was aware they wouldn’t draft him that high.
