Rangers are reportedly ‘at the forefront of the race’ to sign £35 million striker Fabio Silva on loan from Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers in the January transfer window.

As he has already stated, Philippe Clement wants Rangers to sign a new striker as soon as possible next month. And that position won’t have changed after Kemar Roofe hobbled off the field barely 16 minutes into Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over St Johnstone, joining Danilo in the locker room.

Bojan Miovski has already been connected to the Glasgow giants, but Aberdeen has made it plain that they have no intention of selling. Meanwhile, Kevin van Veen seems eager to succeed throughout his tenure at Groningen.

But perhaps the Rangers won’t encounter as many difficulties chasing Fabio Silva.

It’s likely that Wolves will permit the former FC Porto starlet to depart. After playing just 17 minutes of Premier League football since mid-September, Silva might also be eager for a new beginning.

According to O Jogo, Rangers are at the front of the queue for the 21-year-old marksman. Old Firm rivals Celtic are interested too, and both clubs would likely be reliant on Wolves accepting short-term loan bids.

That cannot be ruled out, of course. An impressive spell north of the border at Ibrox or Parkhead could do wonders for Silva’s reputation, giving Wolves a far better chance of recouping much of that misguided £35 million investment.

16 goals last season

“I’ve spoken to Fabio about what we need from him,” Wolves boss Gary O’Neil tells the Shropshire Star. “A consistency in the way he works. We need to see a real intensity all week, and he needs to be really consistent with his actions on the pitch as well.

“Being more secure with the ball, still being a goal threat… He’s a young number nine playing in the hardest league in the world. So when I give him these things to improve, it’s normal.

“(Silva) has been really willing in the last few weeks. He’s worked harder than he was at the start of the season, he’s really trying to force his way in.”

Silva, still young despite many years of first-team football under his belt, scored 16 goals on loan at Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven during the 2023/24 campaign.
