Rangers transfer news: Robby McCrorie wants January move in bid for Scotland place under Steve Clarke

According to the Daily Record, Robby McCrorie is “keen” to leave Rangers on loan in order to push his way into the Scotland team for Euro 2024.

The paper reported via their website on 20 December that the back-up Gers keeper wants games elsewhere as he hopes to get into Steve Clarke’s side for the summer tournament.

Speaking about his possibilities in November, the national team manager had previously indicated that the 25-year-old would need to switch to play regularly enough for him to evaluate his abilities.

McCrorie finished last season with a run of starts but after Jack Butland’s arrival from Crystal Palace in the summer the Scot hasn’t seen a minute of first-team action under either Michael Beale or Philippe Clement.

It’s hard to argue with the decision to bring Butland in since he has been one of the few definitive successes of the transfer business in the previous window.

It is surprising that McCrorie stayed at Ibrox after signing the former England international, though, given that expectations were heightened by three clean sheets in four games to close the season and rumors of high-profile transfer approaches before the transfer market closed.

As a number two for Rangers the youth team product is a great option to have for Clement, but after six first-team appearances for the club since graduating from the academy eight years ago he surely can’t wait forever.

A loan for the second half of the season makes a lot of sense for McCrorie personally if he is in with a chance of going to the Euros, having not yet received a full international cap despite representing his country at every level between under-15s and under-21s.

And there are bound to be takers next month if Clement and Rangers are willing to sanction a move, given the drop off from Butland to third-choice Jon McLaughlin is sizeable were anything to happen to the starter.

A six-month deal with a recall clause if needed would likely work for both parties, although the question of his long-term future is virtually certain to come up again in the summer.
