To win the Viaplay League Cup, Aberdeen’s Stefan Gartenmann concedes his team did not “stress” Rangers enough.

A long cross from Borna Barisic evaded Barry Robson’s defenders, setting up James Tavernier of Ibrox to drill a low effort past Kelle Roos and upset the Dons.

And the frustrated Dane acknowledges that in a game in which they failed to muster a single shot on goal,

his team did not provide enough attacking threat.

He stated, “We didn’t have what it required today. “We needed to put their defense and keeper to a little more test.”

Every time we approached their box, we had the impression that something important was within waiting to be taken out.

However, it is evident that we did not give them the necessary stress, opportunity, or both in their box.

And today, they were marginally more adept at accomplishing that on the other end.

“I believe we gave it our all; the last few circumstances’ quality was what separated us, not the lack of effort.

“The tiny touch in the box, the cross that finds the appropriate player, and the pass in the clutch circumstances.”

“In a couple of our counterattacks, the pass only required a tiny bit more finishing touch.

“I think that’s what separated us from the Rangers today.”

Now that they’re focused on the Premiership, Aberdeen finds itself in tenth place,

far behind the leaders due to the demands of both European play and a lengthy cup run. Gartenmann also believes that facing Livingston so soon after the suffering of Hampden is therapeutic.

“Wednesday is another game,” he added. “That is the ideal opportunity to stand back up.

“We can spend the next hour or so sitting there and feeling sorry for ourselves, but after that we have to get over it.

“In a match like this, there will always be a loser, and that was us today. Football is a hard sport.

“But yes, at this point, the only thing we can do is take it out on Livingston on Wednesday.”

Gartenmann addressed his team’s inability to generate opportunities by praising Rangers instead

of criticizing the forwards on his own squad.

“They defended well, and we had trouble creating opportunities,” he remarked.

“This might be a scoreless game on any other day, and then you go into extra time and who knows? It is capable of turning away.

“Those tiny margins that swing the game in our favor could be ours.

“We are aware of how important it is to score the first goal in the league and cups. We’ve witnessed it a great deal.

It is really challenging to come back from a 1-0 down. That’s how I see it.

Gartenmann tells his team to put their suffering into the challenges that lie ahead, with the Scottish Cup still up for grabs and a clearer match plan making it easier to climb the league.

“After two hours, you’re just dejected and unsure of what to do with yourself.

However, we also see it as an opportunity. We must make every effort to prevent the sensation that exists there at the moment.

The worst emotion a football player can experience is that one.

And at this point, we must go back to that emotion and make every effort to prevent it.

“The manager basically remarked that we put forth the effort, but there was a slight lack of skill in the decisive moments.

“That’s basically it; we would have those margins on any other day.”
