‘Devastated’ Gareth Anscombe pictured in hospital as Japanese club cancel his registration

“Devastated” Gareth Anscombe has disclosed that he will be

out of commission for eight to ten weeks following surgery to address a groyne issue.

The news comes after the fly-half’s injury forced the cancellation of

his registration with Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath,

a new Japanese team.

The Argentine rugby player Nicolas Sanchez has joined the Tokyo-based team to take the No. 10 spot.

Anscombe had groyne surgery a few days after moving to Japan,

having sustained the initial injury during the warm-up before

Wales’ World Cup match against Georgia earlier this year.

Anscombe, who has previously undergone the operation,

reported that everything went well and that he anticipates returning to running in about two months.

“Devastated to find out the groyne injury I sustained around the time of

the World Cup meant I required minor surgery,

but happy to say it went well and I should be back up and running in the next 8-10 weeks,”

Anscombe wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter, along with

a picture of himself in the hospital with his wife Milica.

I’m feeling conflicted right now, but my main goal is to get fit again.”

In a statement released alongside the news that Sanchez would be signing,

Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath stated that Anscombe’s Category C registration was terminated

“because of his condition.”

“Sam Cain, Cheslin Kolbe,

and Nicolas Sanchez are the three players registered in Category C for the 2023–24 season,” the statement reads.

Gareth Anscombe’s Category C registration was cancelled due to his health,

while Sean McMahon was not enrolled as a player prior to the start of the season.

The former Ospreys’ relocation to the Far East eliminated him from consideration for the 2024 Six Nations,

but he has told Warren Gatland that he would be ready for their tour of Australia the following summer.

It is unclear where he will play rugby for his club.
