Santos may offer Alfredo Morelos a whooping £2.3 million in exchange for his breaking his own contract.

After leaving Ibrox in the summer,

the former Rangers striker had a terrible return to football when he joined the Brazilian powerhouses.

His 76 minutes, two bookings, and lack of a goal saw Pele’s former team drop out of

the first division for the first time in their 111-year existence.

If Santos lost, Morelos’ contract had a relegation release clause

that could only be triggered with the club’s approval.

Following the appointment of a new president last week,

Marcelo Teixeira—who is currently serving as the club’s third president

moved quickly to activate the release clause,

allowing Morelos to depart on January 1st, when his contract expires.

With a reported salary of £40,000 a week,

he is the club’s highest earner and is still under contract until August 2025.

And it has proven to be a challenge for teams in his native Colombia and Mexico

who have shown interest in signing the 27-year-old.

Morelos isn’t in a hurry to quit unless a team offers him as much as he does.

Furthermore, according to rumours from Brazil,

Santos would need to pay almost £2.3 million to end his contract and be released from

salary when they play in Serie B the following season.

During his six years in Glasgow, Morelos made 178 league games for Rangers,

scoring 78 goals in the league and 124 goals overall—including a record Scottish Premiership.
