This Saturday, Everton plays Burnley, and for the first time in what must seem like an age to fans on the blue side of Merseyside, the team is full of optimism and confidence.

Much of that can be attributed to the amazing work done by Sean Dyche, who is now receiving

his due right before he returns to Turf Moor for his first meeting with his old team.

It seemed the Toffees’ time had come after the first five Premier League games produced just

one point and two goals, both of which came at Sheffield United. Many had predicted the team

would finally collapse this season after just surviving the drop at the last minute the previous time around.

This coincided with Alex Iwobi’s deadline-day sale to Fulham, which did not result in the signing of a replacement.

It came after the two previous windows’ sales of Anthony Gordon and Richarlison,

neither of whom saw any significant reinvestment because of the club’s then-current problems with sustainability and profit.

Naturally, those problems blew up in the middle of November, leading to a 10-point deduction,

a great deal of resentment within the club and among the supporters, and the Premier League

being called “corrupt” for using the Blues as an example while ignoring Manchester City and their 115 purported infractions.

For a variety of reasons, these are actually very different cases, but it was simple to understand the fury felt by an extremely irate support base that has been badly let down over the Farhad Moshiri years.

The somewhat mysterious and undoubtedly dangerous 777 Partners appear to be the conclusion

of his reign of (unintentional) terror, but their status has been unclear for months, adding to the unease around the club.
