Kristaps Porzingis Explores His Relationship With Luka Doncic

Porzingis opens up about his relationship with Doncic on JJ Redick‘s podcast, The Old Man and The Three.

If he and Doncic engaged in a “pissing contest,” Redick queries him about it. For those who may not understand the expression, it refers to a rivalry that serves to establish superiority.

The Boston Celtic acknowledges that in his early years on the team, there was some rivalry. He even says that in an attempt to outdo each other, they tried to make it work.

Early on, for sure. I think we both tried to make it work.”

The big man attributes the lack of synergy to immaturity and a lack of communication from both parties.

“I think communication, like maturity, communication on both of our parts should’ve been better.”

His Time With The Mavericks Couldn’t Work

The former All-Star gives several explanations for why his stint with the Dallas Mavericks didn’t work out when Redick asks him why.

First off, the 28-year-old believes his immaturity was the cause. He had only played in the league for four years at that point, the most recent being a missed season due to an injury.

“It’s a big mix of things. Maturity, for sure. I’m talking about what I could have done better.”

Furthermore, to add to his immaturity, he wouldn’t or couldn’t pay attention to analytics and numbers. This is an essential part of any sport or competition since you want to know the ins and outs of teams. Analyzing their numbers would help spot weaknesses and strengths you can exploit.

However, he does admit that it would’ve been better if somebody properly explained the statistics and numbers to him.

“I wasn’t that much into analytics and numbers. If somebody, at that stage of my career, presented it to me the right way and said, ‘This is what we need from you. You’re gonna be way more effective doing this.’ Like kind of explain to me better, I think that would have made a difference a little bit.”
