Fabrizio Romano claims Rangers have missed out on signing ‘outstanding’ Arsenal teenager

Rangers have missed out on the signature of Arsenal talent Lino Sousa as he prepares to complete a move to their Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Rangers have been linked with several left backs this month,

and it appears that Brazilian prospect Jefte has emerged as the top target in that position.

Borna Barisic is out of contract this summer, and Ridvan Yilmaz has been linked with a move away from Ibrox.

A new left back is needed,

although Kai Wagner has stayed with the Philadelphia Union,

while links to Twente ace Gijs Smal have been downplayed.

Another name has been ruled out,

as Arsenal’s Lino Sousa will not join Rangers before the transfer deadline.

Sousa’s name has not been mentioned during this transfer window,

but Fabrizio Romano thinks Rangers are interested in signing the teenager.

According to Romano, Rangers competed with Juventus and Galatasaray for Sousa’s services.

However, all three teams have been outbid by Aston Villa,

who have now agreed to sign Sousa on a permanent basis.

A medical is expected in the coming hours, with Villa edging out Rangers for Sousa’s signing.

The 18-year-old was born in Portugal’s capital,

Lisbon, but relocated to Wolverhampton when he was eight.

Sousa joined West Bromwich Albion and impressed enough to secure a transfer to Arsenal in 2022.

Sousa has been around the Arsenal first-team squad but has yet to make his debut,

despite appearing in training and matchday squads.

An England Under-19 international, Sousa has been hailed as ‘outstanding’

by former Arsenal development coach Kevin Betsy.

Arsenal appear to be preparing to let Sousa go,

and it is not surprising that he will return to the West Midlands by joining Villa.

Rangers may have seen enormous promise in Sousa,

but this appears to be a deal that will not happen as all eyes turn to APOEL loanee Jefte.
