Why Cowboys’ Dak Prescott won’t win NFL MVP, but should

Given how the Dallas Cowboys’ season concluded, not many people will be eager to grab a flag and march in support of Dak Prescott in

the MVP argument. Few people were calling for Prescott to win his first MVP of the season after Dallas’

humiliating home loss to a subpar Green Bay Packers squad.

Out of all the quarterback finalists, the Cowboys’ signal-caller may have the best case when you consider the season as a whole. The

other three quarterbacks in the running are Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Brock Purdy,

and Prescott has a compelling case against each of them on paper.

Compared to Lamar Jackson, who is now the betting favorite to win the award, Prescott has more total yards and touchdowns. In

comparison to the quarterback for the Ravens, he also has a higher completion percentage and quarterback rating.

This season, Allen had a higher volume than Prescott, but Prescott was far more effective. The Cowboys quarterback outperformed

Allen in terms of QBR by over 15 points, threw more touchdowns, and had half as many interceptions as Allen did this season. While

Allen’s running game helped him reach higher totals, Prescott still averaged 4.4 versus Allen’s 4.7 yards per rush. Ranking Allen’s

2023–24 season higher than Prescott’s would be counterintuitive given that Prescott

was criticized for making too many selections the previous season.

Purdy’s stats were not as good as Prescott’s. Prescott’s season was statistically superior to Purdy’s, with a higher completion

percentage, more total yards and touchdowns, fewer interceptions, and superior rushing records overall.

What makes the quarterback with the best stats not the front-runner, then? I take it you’re a quarterback? For this reason, even if

Christian McCaffrey has over 2,000 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns, he is treated as an afterthought in this debate.

Purdy’s claim is dependent on the 49ers’ success this season in San Francisco. Under Purdy’s leadership, the Niners appeared

invincible throughout the season as they won a division championship.

Purdy’s argument is strengthened by the fact that his stats are

comparable to those of the NFL’s most prolific quarterbacks.

Purdy and Jackson both possess winning qualities, but Jackson stands out even

more because of his distinct skill set. There isn’t a

quarterback in football who runs the way Michael Jackson does, and this season

he improved his game with elite arm talent.

Additionally, one might argue that Jackson and Prescott are each more beneficial to their teams than Purdy is to his. Though the

Niners likely don’t think so after the second-year quarterback secured San Fran’s third Super Bowl berth in the previous ten years,

Kyle Shanahan may find it difficult to decide between Jackson, Prescott, and Purdy.
